Left 4 Dead 2 DLC Review - The Passing

We have all been waiting for this, time to see our old friends from Left 4 Dead appear and interact with the Left 4 Dead 2 survivors. We kind of miss them don’t we? Even tho we can still visit them by booting up Left 4 Dead. But I want more from them. I personally can’t wait to hear Francis crack up new funny/corny jokes, Louis grabbing pills, Bill reminiscing wars and Zoey for being “the girl” in the team. We expected a lot from this DLC, including new weapons, new un-common common infected and story line update (we hoped this map do explain some of the continuity error in the original Left 4 Dead). So off to my gaming machine and lets boot up Left 4 Dead 2.

So upon entering the title screen, I suddenly noticed blog updates on Left 4 Dead 2 and a new game mode called “Mutation”. As I read from the description given, it says “Versus mode with realism. You can’t see them but they can see you”. Mutation game mode will vary every 2 weeks according to Valve’s blog post. Before I launched the game, I noticed that it only gave 3 levels. This reminds me of the previous Left 4 Dead map “Crash Course”, which gave you 2 very large and open levels.

We meet our old friend’s on top the bridge. Who you meet, varies every time you start the game. Because this campaign is the continuation from “Dead Centre”, we see Jimmy Gibs Jr’s car (the escape vehicle from “Dead Centre”). Now your goal is to cross the river by foot towards the end of the bridge. From there you must activate a generator that will drop the bridge so you continue your journey to New Orleans. The first level was pretty straight forward. You have to go to a set of alleys similar to the first map of “The Parish”; only difference is its night time. I came across the un-common infected “The Fallen” a couple of times and they are hard to kill, but they are not dangerous. Most of the time I killed them but they don’t burst into flames as stated by Valve. So, it’s probably because I’m lucky but who knows, can’t argue getting free med kits from that guy. Just before the end of the map, we see a wedding ceremony, probably the best part of the map.

A fallen zombie, notice the medkit, molotov and bandoliers hes wearing.

A nice looking ally.

A Molotov cocktail is the right gift for this bride.

Second part of the campaign is we have to get underground to get across the river. The map is very small and narrow making it dangerous when you encounter a tank, witch or a charger. Fortunately there are chest box all around the map that supplies you with Molotov’s, pipes and pills. In addition to that, I found the M60 Machine gun. Initially it gives you 150 rounds that you can shoot with without reloading. Just like the chainsaw or the grenade launcher, the M60’s ammo cannot be replenished from any regular ammo stockpile. So when you run out of ammo, you will lose the weapon. Nevertheless, becoming Rambo in Left 4 Dead is fun as hell and it’s a powerful gun. The map ends with a crescendo event that requires you to get to the other side of the sewer to stop it. A crap load of hordes will come from all directions to stop you. This is probably the part where an auto shotgun, a couple of bio bombs or pipes will come in handy.

Now thats a lot of pills.

This tank doesn't have a chance!

Going thru an underground passage to cross the river, supposedly educational.

A bar full of guns.

Going down towards the sewers.

Then the finally, which is my favourite part of this campaign. We get to see our old Left 4 Dead crew and they agree to help us lower the bridge. One of them seems to be missing tho, but I won’t spoil that for you. The escape requires you to turn on the generator using fuel cans. Compared to Dead Centres finally, this map is big and you can’t toss the cans down like in the mall. But not to worry, the Left 4 Dead crew are giving you supporting fire from above. So when a tank tries to smash you into a pulp, run towards where they are. Think of it as a “run like hell while some one is shooting at the tank zone”. In addition, they are kind enough to toss random items for you to use. A lot of cooperation is needed if you are playing this map on expert or realism. The longer it takes you to fuel up the generator, the more the amount of tanks will spawn as time progress.

Glad to see some familiar faces.

Those cans are scattered all over the place.

While they help shoot at the zombies, they also like to toss items like pipe bombs, pills etc.

When a tank is comming at you, just run around in this spot. He will go down in no time.

Overall, this DLC is alright. It satisfy’s our nostalgia by seeing our old friends again from Left 4 Dead. The map is well made and the new weapons are fun (I’m going to try to make the game say “Heavy Machinegun” when I pick up an M60, Metal Slug Fans should know what I’m talking about). One thing for sure is that this map will be hell on versus mode. Its wide open space gives a lot of room for hunters, smokers, boomers etc to walk around on the roofs. A well organized team of special infected would probably finish off the survivors before they reach 25% of the first map easy. So hopefully, we will expect more DLC’s from Valve in the future so people will keep playing this awesome zombie game.
